Who is this course for?

This online course is designed for anyone interested in developing their skills in facilitating online events and courses. There is no cost to take this course. It is offered as an open educational resource by INASP.

Note: This course is different from our self-study tutorial on online facilitation. This course contains facilitated activities and facilitator support which are not available in the self-study tutorial.

What will you learn?

After thoroughly working through this course and completing all the activities, you should be able to:

  • Design and plan a (real-time) online event such as a video conference or webinar
  • Facilitate a (real-time) online event that encourages active participation and learning
  • Facilitate an online course (not taking place in real-time) that encourages active participation and learning such as this Moodle course
  • Select a ‘good enough’ balance of digital tools and facilitation strategies to engage participants online and meet your (learning) outcomes

5 weeks (starting from 10 October 2022)

  • Unit 1: Introduction to facilitating learning and active participation online (Week 1)
  • Unit 2: Designing and planning synchronous online events (Weeks 2 and 3)
  • Unit 3: Facilitating synchronous online events (Weeks 3 and 4)
  • Unit 4: Facilitating (asynchronous) online courses (Week 5)
Expected time commitment

3 to 5 hours per week

Nature of learning resources and activities

Text-based learning resources with embedded activities; discussion forums; live sessions; reflection activities; quizzes

What support you can expect

There will be a course moderator, a team of facilitators, and a technical administrator. They will support you with your learning on the discussion forums.

When the course begins, limited technical support will be available on the “technical support” forum in the course. Unfortunately we will not be able to respond to individual email requests for support before or during the course.

Internet and device requirements
  • A laptop or desktop computer in good working condition, including functioning audio and webcam;
  • A reliable broadband internet connection (please be aware that you may have to manage the amount of data you consume).
